How Do I Lay Self Adhesive Vinyl Floor Tiles?

When installing self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles, the quality of the finish depends entirely on the quality of the preparations you put in. It’s not difficult. Self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles are designed as DIY products, but if you cut the corners, it will eventually show up and you’ll regret it.

You will need: tiles, 6mm plywood, screws, PVA solution and brushes, box cutter or craft knife, metal ruler, scissors, tape measure, pinstripe, pencil, card, rolling pin or tile roller, hair dryer or heater, time.

Buy tiles: calculate the area of the room you want to complete and add 10% to that. Now round it up to the next full square meter. The extra makes for weird cuts/waste and anything that gets you dirty in the process. If you don’t have to order anymore towards the end, you save pressure and shipping costs.

Tiles: put them in the room, in their box, where you want to put them. Make sure the boxes lie flat, not on their ends. Leave them there for two days and let them adjust to the environment. They may have been exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity and rough handling on the way home.

Existing Floor: Regardless of the quality of the existing floor, applying a layer of 6mm plywood first will give you a better finish. Make sure it is securely connected to the board below and that all screw heads are countersunk. If it’s concrete or screed, you can get a product sometimes called a “basement test” that can seal the concrete and cause tiles to stick directly to it, but you should only really try this if the concrete is absolutely smooth. You have a better chance of better paving results.

Sealing layer: Not as technical as it sounds. Make sure your screw heads are level or lower than the surface of the laminate, vacuum the laminate strictly, make sure there is no dirt or dust on the floor, then apply the sealant. Mix approx. Mix 1 part PVA wood glue with 5 parts water and then apply a large amount of plywood with an old paint brush. Don’t pull yourself into a corner, make sure you don’t leave dirt on your dust-free layer while walking. Let it dry – it won’t take long.

Laying tiles: Don’t start from the corner, go around the room, you will see that your room is not square! The best way is to find the center point of each wall and use a chalk line to draw a cross on the floor (for detailed instructions, browse “Chalkline”). Start by pasting the tiles in the corner described by the two intersecting lines. Keep checking that you are not squeezing any dirt under the tiles – they will show up and cause uneven wear. After laying the tiles, use the tile rollers to go all over the floor, or if you don’t want to rent one, an unobtrusive household rolling pin and lots of hard work!

Cutting: Straight-cutting metal ruler and Stanley/craft knife are the best. Write a line on the surface of the tile, then simply break the backing paper and cut it open. If you need to make complex cuts, such as around the bottom of a door frame, make a template with thin cardstock, cut gradually until it fits, then draw on the tiles. A good pair of scissors will cut through the tiles easily, although it’s better to cut the tiles rather than trying to cut them in one go. If you think it’s heavy, try heating the tiles with a stove or hairdryer.
